With each chapter, Dumlao examines what various LGBTQ+ experiences teach about disrupting norms, exploring identity, and creating chosen families that affirm one's truth. Featuring a diverse pantheon of gay uncles ("guncles") and other queer mentors, their stories offer unique perspectives about life, love, and personal empowerment.

As they push forward, the three adapt to life in America in different ways: Huong takes up with a Vietnamese car salesman who is also new in town Tuan tries to connect with his heritage by joining a local Vietnamese gang and Binh, now going by Ben, embraces his burgeoning sexuality. While she copes with this loss, her sons, Tuan and Binh, grow up in their absent father's shadow, haunted by a man and a country trapped in their memory and imagination.
Over time, Huong realizes she will never see Cong again. As she and her boys begin to settle into life in America, she continues to send letters and tapes back to Cong, hopeful that they will be reunited and her children will grow up with a father. When Huong arrives in New Orleans with her two young sons, she is jobless, homeless, and worried about her husband, Cong, who remains in Vietnam. Our program begins at 6:00 pm, with an introduction from a member of our Busboys and Poets team, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Join us for this illuminating panel discussion, including quick reads from each title and a Q&A to invite the audience to be part of the conversation. We’ll hear about the experience of coming out to an immigrant family, learn how queer family members can mentor the younger generations, and how found families play an invaluable role in LGBTQ+ culture. Facilitated by Ryan Williams, the conversation will explore the theme of family as it relates to each of their books. Writers Eric Nguyen (Things We Lost to The Water), Michael Dumlao (The Wisdom of Guncles), and Eric Peterson (Love, Loyalty & Vermouth) come together to discuss the importance of family in the LGBT community.
